The Red Sox have just traded Mookie Betts and needed another right handed bat because they only have lefties and 1 righty out there. They also needed defensive players in the outfield. The Red Sox only had Benitendi who had a .266 batting average and had 13 home runs and 68 runs batted in, then they had Jackie Bradley Jr who had a .225 batting average with 21 home runs and 62 runs batted in. They also have newly acquired Alex Verdugo who is going to be good this year after he had a .294 batting average and 14 home runs.

They also have JD Martinez who had a .304 batting average and 36 home runs with 105 runs batted in. So they have decided to sign the outfielder and former San Francisco Giant Kevin Pillar to a 1 year major league deal. He is a tremendous outfielder but nowhere close to Mookie who is now on the Dodgers who are said to probably win 100+ games and win the World Series. The Red Sox on the other hand are expected to win only around 85 games.

The Red Sox have lost one of their best power bats and top baseball players in history and a former pitching star. So this season they have only 25-35 home run hitters and only 2 pitchers that can probably go  under a 4.00 earn run average. They do now have a very good defensive outfield and infield. They also have a few good prospects. One of their best is shortstop Jeter Downs who hit 24 home runs and had 86 runs batted in, in the minors last year. Now back to Kevin pillar. He hit a career high 21 home runs and 88 runs batted in. He also had a great defensive year with the Giants as well. So I think this will help the Red Sox in the long run.
